June 1–July 31, 2014 Annie Bird is a policy advisor at the US Department of State’s Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations, where she leads the bureau’s work on atrocities prevention and transitional justice. Previously, she worked at the International Center for Transitional Justice, UNICEF, Benetech, the Judicial System Monitoring Programme, and other organizations in West Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. She has taught courses on foreign policy and international organizations at the University of California, Berkeley, and the London School of Economics, and she has published on state responsibility for human rights violations and the classification of armed conflicts.
Dr. Bird has a PhD in international relations from the London School of Economics, which she attended as a Marshall Scholar, an LLM in international human rights law from the University of Essex, and a BA in peace and conflict studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Her PhD dissertation examines US foreign policy on transitional justice with case studies on Cambodia, Liberia, and Colombia and will be published by Oxford University Press.
