On a ship bound for New York, a 12-year-old German Jewish refugee wore an ID badge. It reads, in English and in French: “My name is Susie Hilsenrath. I am sailing for the United States on SS Serpa Pinto.”
Susan was traveling with her brother Joseph to be reunited with her parents and younger brother in the United States.
As their ship approached the United States, she and the other 50 refugee children on board caught their first sight of the Statue of Liberty—a sight Susan never forgot.
