President Obama Announces Appointments to United States Holocaust Memorial Council

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, President Barack Obama announced his intent to appoint the following individuals as a member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council:

Susan Levine is Director Emeritus of Hospice of the Valley, a position she has held since 2016. Ms. Levine was previously Executive Director of Hospice of the Valley from 1994 to 2016.  She held various positions at Olsten Kimberly QualityCare from 1974 to 1994 including Regional Director, Branch Manager, Assistant Branch Manager, and Personnel Director.  Ms. Levine was a Staff Nurse at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital from 1986 to 1988, Clinic Administrator at General Medical Associates Medical Clinic from 1974 to 1976, and Supervisor Service Coordinator at St. Luke’s Medical Center from 1972 to 1976.  She is a member of several boards including the Health Care Policy Advisory Council at Harvard Medical School, the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC) Home Healthcare Nurses Association Advisory Board, and the Arizona Women’s Foundation. Ms. Levine was inducted into the NAHC Hall of Fame in 2014. Ms. Levine received a B.S. from the Temple University and an A.S. from Scottsdale Community College.

Elliot J. Schrage is Vice President of Communications and Public Policy at Facebook, a position he has held since 2008. Mr. Schrage was Vice President of Global Communications and Public Affairs at Google from 2005 to 2008. He was the Bernard L. Schwarz Senior Fellow in Business and Foreign Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations from 2002 to 2006, Senior Vice President of Global Affairs at Gap, Inc. from 2000 to 2001, and Adjunct Professor at Columbia University and Columbia Law School from 1990 to 2006. Mr. Schrage was first appointed to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council in 2012.  Mr. Schrage received an A.B. from Harvard College, an M.P.P. from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.

Irvin Shapell is a Partner at Cassidy, Cogan, Shapell & Voegelin, L.C., a position he has held since 2013.  Mr. Shapell is also Owner and Founder of Woodbine House, Inc., and previously served as its Publisher from 1986 to 2004.  He was President of The Jewish Advocacy Center from 1983 to 1987 and served as an Associate Attorney for Morgan, Lewis & Bockius from 1979 to 1983.  Mr. Shapell is a member of several boards including the Board of Trustees of the Beth Israel Congregation, the Board of Directors of Shapell Investment Properties, Inc., and serves as President of The Larch Foundation. Mr. Shapell was previously on the Board of Directors of the National Down Syndrome Congress. Mr. Shapell received a B.A. from the University of Washington and a J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis.

Howard Unger is Founder and Managing Partner at Saw Mill Capital, positions he has held since 1997.  Mr. Unger was Founding Partner at Chase Capital from 1989 to 1996 and Managing Director for Chase Merchant Banking Group from 1989 to 1996.  He served as Vice President at the Leveraged Capital Group of Citibank from 1983 to 1989. Mr. Unger was first appointed to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council in 2011.  Mr. Unger received a B.S. from Binghamton University and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago.

Clemantine Wamariya is a human rights advocate and a survivor of the Rwandan genocide.  Ms. Wamariya is also an independent student career consultant and a social entrepreneur, positions she has held since 2014 and 2005, respectively.  She served as a tutor for the Yale Refugee Project from 2009 to 2013 and was a translator at Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services from 2009 to 2012.  Ms. Wamariya serves on the Global Board of Directors of Women for Women International.  She was first appointed to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council in 2011. Ms. Wamariya received a B.A. from Yale University.
